How I Got Started

My name is Tyler Giannattasio, and I’m an engineer by day with a beautiful wife and a brood of kids at home. DIY Tyler began as a hobby that snowballed into a side hustle with the help of social media. I was probably about 22 or 23 years old when I first started woodworking.

After my wife and I bought a house, I decided to improve on the sad state of the rubbish furniture we were faced with. Basically, I wanted to provide something that would last for my family. Starting with a modest woodshop, I began creating furniture for my own household in about 2015.

I started this hobby as a way to avoid replicating my daily engineering work at home. Building stuff is my relaxation because it allows me to let go of all the stresses of the day. This is especially true at the tail end after I’ve put on the finish, or even when I’m walking by a piece that I completed weeks before.

The Growth of DIY Tyler

Originally, DIY Tyler was a blog that tracked my various home improvement projects, including my woodworking builds. However, I found that writing a blog took up too much time and wasn’t enjoyable for me to do. After all, I’m an engineer, not a writer!

However, when I found the YouTube community, I figured I could improve the state of videos in this industry. I learned a lot of what I know now from both my dad and the woodworking YouTube and Instagram communities that I have become a part of.

It’s awesome that I can now add back to that community with some of my own ideas.

DIY Tyler is a lot of work for me as a side hustle, but it has definitely been worth it. The social media community is fantastic, and I get to make videos for builds and projects I’d already be doing for my house.

What Inspires My Woodworking

About 99% of my inspiration springs from a need. My favorite projects are ones in which I engineer a solution to a problem and then build it with whatever medium I can get my hands on to get the job done.

From an engineer’s perspective, my favorite thing about woodworking in particular is the act of designing and cutting everything followed by putting everything together and having it fit the right way. The inner happiness that results from that is what I enjoy most about the process. Sometimes, you just have to make something if there isn’t a solution out there already.

My Favorite Crafted Items

My ambrosia maple wood table with welded metal legs is one of my greatest accomplishments. That piece is special because it looks great, and we sit around it for meals several times a day.

I also felt accomplished after building a set of lockers for an addition to our house. The finish on them is probably the best finish I’ve ever put on a piece of wood.

Announcing the New “Dal Cuore” Furniture Line

Overall, I’d say I’m proud of the work I’ve done on my home in general. I’ve done everything from landscaping and jungle gyms for the kids to roof repair and everything in between.

I always want to challenge myself with my builds, because if it’s too easy, I won’t enjoy doing it as much. No DIY project is too complicated; you just have to break it down and then get started on it.

And since I’m always up for a challenge, I am launching a new brand of custom furniture. My brand name, Dal Cuore (Italian for “From the Heart”), says it all. Not only will I craft each item with loving care and the engineering-level precision my fans know and love, but I will even embed a purple heartwood “heart” logo in every item I create.

I’m looking forward to sharing the work of my hands with you in a brand new way with Dal Cuore. Now you won’t just get to watch me build tables, chairs, and other high-quality furniture items. You’ll be able to enjoy a piece of your own from DIY Tyler himself.

Each item will be designed and built based on my nearly 10 years of woodworking and furniture-building experience. Click here to get a quote!

From my shop to your house, Dal Cuore furniture will be the perfect item to pull together a living room, dining room, kitchen, or anywhere else in your home!
